Our Pastor: The Rev. Leslie D. Scanlon
Our Seminarian: "Vicar" Kellin Kumanchik-Gibbs
The term "Vicar" is commonly used in ELCA congregations to mean
As part of her contextual education, Kellin will engage is service-learning about 5 hours per week throughout the Spring 2018 semester.
Kellin was born and raised in Fairborn Ohio with her mother, father, and younger sister. She graduated high school a year early to join the Marine Corps where she served as motor transportation for many different units for 5 years active and two years reserve. She deployed to Iraq, in an area called Mosul up by the Syrian border for just shy of a year. After her active duty time, she moved back to Ohio for a year before she was transferred to Virginia Beach where she met Brian, her husband, and found Jesus Christ.
Most of her faith formation comes out of a non-denominational church in Virginia Beach, even though she grew up Lutheran and partook in catechism and confirmation classes. She never really had a relationship with her Lord and Savior until later in life. Because of her new found relationship with Christ, she finally decided to answer the call to ministry that was placed on my heart at the age of 13 by a vicar, to whom she is still close, that worked at her church. She then attended Regent University and pursued a degree in biblical theology. From there, she enrolled at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Ohio to begin her seminary studies and has since transferred to Luther Seminary in Minnesota.
People ask her all the time why she decided to become a pastor and how does she know that’s what she is supposed to be and do. The answer to that question is always, "I didn’t choose it HE chose me. HE called me, though I ran from it (like Jonah did), and HE saved my life, both metaphorically and literally."
